Artist Bio

Picture
I began drawing as soon as I could hold a pencil, and first learned to draw and paint by watching my father at his easel.  By the time I entered kindergarten I was totally absorbed and would draw pictures and doodles on any unsuspecting piece of paper or book that came my way, including my textbooks; an activity that did not endear me to my teachers.

I was born in England, and emigrated to Hawaii as a young woman where I raised my family, and enjoyed living in paradise. While living in Hawaii I attended classes at the Honolulu Academy of Arts in Life Drawing, Sculpture, Jewelry Fabrication, Chinese Brush Painting and Graphic Arts. I also took courses at University of Hawaii in Fabric and Fashion Design, and Interior Design.

Artist Statement

My current work is primarily concerned with line, color and texture, predominately created using acrylic paints and mediums, mixed media, collage, found objects and unusual papers.

I enjoy experimenting, building up layers of paint and papers and then removing parts to reveal new designs or images, or, I cover up certain parts to create something mysterious and unrevealed. I rarely start out with a finished image in mind preferring to create intuitively, letting the painting unfold and reveal itself to me as I progress.

My ideas and materials come from everywhere, a shape in nature, an unusual pattern in an unexpected place, a quick glimpse of a beautiful color. These visual ingredients germinate to the point where I need to start interpreting the ideas on canvas, paper or other surfaces.

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. Pablo Picasso
